Homeowners might never have heard of Wildfire Defense Systems, Inc. But the Montana-based company could have protected their house during one of the region's recent wildfires — or it could soon.
The firm is hired by insurance companies to provide private contractors that head to homes located in the path of an oncoming wildfire and prepare those properties so there's less likelihood that they'll burn. Wildfire Defense Systems say it complements the work of local, state and federal fire fighting agencies.
As the Caldor Fire threatens South Lake Tahoe, the company's workers are there.
"Specific to the Caldor fire, approximately 40 engines have been dispatched daily by (Wildfire Defense Systems) on incident," according to a company statement. "This fire season, Wildfire Defense Systems has typically been dispatched on 5-10 separate fire events a day."
Reminds me a recent story about how winery/vineyard owners in Napa and Sonoma are contemplating forming their own fire-fighting force, given that CalFire has been unable to ward off the worst of recent fires that have threatened that region. And here's a 2018 story about the phenomenon.
