Umbrellas as a reflection of urban-rural difference

This story in the City section of today's NYT suggests that umbrella use during snow, which is something folks apparently do in the city, is a reflection of the urban-rural divide. The author writes: "It’s the old rural-versus-urban divide, the difference between accepting and finding enjoyment in nature’s arbitrary whims and refusing to find pleasure in this sort of thing."
